Journey of a Thai Taxi Driver and Novel Coronavirus

Bangkok, Thailand – A taxi driver in Thailand has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) without a travel history to China. Despite contact with Chinese tourists, no transmission to close contacts has been observed.

The 51-year-old driver sought medical help after experiencing symptoms including fever and cough. He was admitted to a hospital in Bangkok and later transferred to an infectious diseases institute. Tests confirmed the presence of SARS-CoV-2.

The driver had interacted with Chinese tourists exhibiting coughing but wearing masks. No travel history to China was reported. The driver’s close contacts tested negative, and he has since been discharged in stable condition.

Health officials stress the importance of preventive measures and ongoing investigations into the source of the infection.
