Frontier Biotechnology in Emerging Diseases
“Emerging diseases” are an important public health problem that can lead to disasters threatening national security, and cause health and economic burdens. At present, the rate of emerging diseases is rapidly increasing. As a recent example, by the end of the year 2019, a pandemic outbreak of novel Coronavirus (SARS-nCoV-2) or COVID-19, began in Wuhan, China and rapidly spread worldwide.
In 2013, Professor Kiat Ruxrungtham established the Integrated Frontier Biotechnology in responses to Emerging Diseases, gathering professors and researchers from various fields. This will enable Thailand to have an infrastructure that is sustainable and self-reliant in surveillance, prevention, treatment, and effective response to emerging diseases in the future.
