Excellence Center for Colorectal Cancer

Professor  Dr. Chucheep Sahakijrungruang was the key person who initiated the Excellence Center for Colorectal Cancer under the supervision of the colorectal surgery unit, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. Operating only for a short period, though, the Excellence Center for Colorectal Cancer has succeeded in discovering new treatment methods and has been nationally and internationally recognized for excellent new medical equipment. The multidisciplinary team are joint partners among the team of radiologists and oncologists.

The most outstanding and recognized quality of the center is its world class medical techniques and its one stop service medical treatment, providing a rapid diagnosis of colonoscopy where there is the risk of a tumor. For cases in need of medical treatment, the Laparoscopic surgery is quickly carried out. And if a surgery is needed, the patients can undergo  minimally invasive surgery for a quick recovery and less injury. A close collaboration among experts such as radiologists and oncologists are co-working in the integrated multidisciplinary work.

Currently, the Excellence Center for Colorectal Cancer has been significantly improved and developed in its research works, personnel development and the people’s awareness of colorectal cancer prevention.

Achievements, Awards to the Center

1. Having developed the new medical innovation to be recognized internationally.
2. The Excellence Center regularly welcomes foreign surgeons in ASEAN to study colorectal cancer surgery, the initial cancer surgery and the advanced cancer surgery.
3. Doctors in the multidisciplinary team are continuously invited as the guest speakers on many international lectures about colorectal cancer treatment.
4. The surgery techniques of endoscopy mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection were initiated for the 1^st time in Thailand and were used to maximum advantage by the fellowship doctors for the extension of colorectal surgery. While the colonoscopy of large polyps up to 15 centimeter is successfully done without the Exploratory laparotomy.
5. The system for receiving colorectal cancer surgery and the treatment follow up have been successfully created.
6. The network for colorectal cancer surgery and database system in colorectal cancer patients is established and used among King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and its Network Hospitals.
7. Academic seminars for knowledge and surgical technique education including Laparoscopic surgery endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection are regularly arranged.

Vision

We aim to be a comprehensive Excellence Center in treating colorectal cancer patients and to be recognized internationally.

Mission

1. To publicize and promote the working system, surgical techniques and laparoscopic surgery, endoscopy mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection to foreign Surgeons in ASEAN.
2. To expand and develop database networking of surgery up to national level for colorectal cancer and wider follow-up treatments.
3. To produce research about colorectal cancer that could be recognized internationally.
4. To transfer knowledge and surgical techniques about laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection to Thai and foreign surgeons via international workshops, video conferences and social media.
